A new generation of biofuels

Cyanobacteria are one of the oldest lifeforms on the planet, evolving for some 2.8 billion years, very successful and found in an amazing diversity of places on earth. They can photosynthesize but also survive using Hydrogen Sulfide, some can fix nitrogen from the air, transforming it into a form usable by plants, One species of Cyanobacteria, Arthrospira platensis is sold in health food stores as a food suppliment called "Spirulina". Some species of Cyanobacteria produce very toxic compounds, it is a very diverse line.

Algae have great potential in the quest for biofuel, but the basic research needed to support the farming of algae is starving. Recently several start-up companies have failed, and energy research in this area is not funded at a level that will support the development of basic research and applied research.
